What is a TRX?

A TRX is a unique piece of training equipment made from nylon straps that allows the user to suspend their body weight in order to perform hundreds of different functional exercises. It is portable and can be used almost anywhere, all that is needed is an anchor point, for example a door, tree or overhead bar. It is suitable for people of all levels of fitness as the difficulty of any exercise on it can be easily adjusted.

In my opinion this is the best piece of kit I have ever used and I would strongly recommend it to everyone!

What are the benefits of TRX training?

The two key words when talking about TRX training are core and functional training so I will briefly explain what they mean before I continue talking about the TRX.

The core muscles are a group of muscles that support the pelvis and spine and are can directly affect an individual’s posture and performance. Athletic movements demand that the core is engaged to control trunk movement, generate power and provide a stable centre through which we can exert and resist force. Core training therefore is performing exercises that engage the core muscles.

Functional training is using movements that are relevant to everyday life. Traditional weight training often targets one muscle at a time in a single plane of motion; this is not very functional and can have many negative

effects on the body. Functional Training on the other hand requires many muscles to work simultaneously and results in the body having greater muscular balance which is good for performance and posture. Functional training is also very useful for fat loss as the whole body has to work harder to perform movements therefore it burns more calories.

I will now explain how the TRX is used to utilise these two training methods.

TRX suspension training encourages an unusually high degree of core engagement because your centre of gravity is displaced outside of its base of support, forcing your core to work hard to stabilise your body. By changing the angle of your body you can increase or decrease the amount of demand put on your core to keep you stable.

Almost every exercise you can perform on the TRX is functional because multiple muscle groups are required to carry out the vast majority of exercises. All three planes of motion can be explored providing you with a well balanced, athletic physique.
